Before the collapse of the towers, brave first responders from all over the city were attempting to rescue Americans and others trapped in the doomed buildings. The brave men of New York Fire Department Ladder 3 were part of the futile rescue efforts. Their heroism, bravery, and selflessness, in blatant defiance of an order to retreat from the smoking Twin Towers, cost them their lives as they attempted to rescue trapped victims.
